PSHOP: Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Outcome Project

SHOP, a prospective observational study, is now in its 8th year. The goals of the study include:

  1. Identify specific pathophysiologic processes during the acute phase of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) associated with early (3 month) and late (12 month) cognitive or emotional dysfunction
  2. Evaluate the clinical relevance of cognitive or emotional dysfunction after SAH in terms of impact on life satisfaction and objective quality of life

Eligilble Participants: Potential subjects include male and non-pregnant female patients 18 years of age and older, who have sustained a SAH confirmed by CT or lumbar puncture. In addition to standard clinical evaluation and treatment for SAH, at discharge a brief neurologic examination and mental status test (orientation to time, place, etc.) will be performed. The patient will then return for a three-hour follow-up evaluation at 3 and 12 months after SAH, in order to evaluate long-term neurological status, disability, emotional status, cognitive functioning, and overall quality of life.
