PRoFESS: Prevention Regimen for Effectively
Avoiding Second Strokes

As stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of neurological disability worldwide, prevention of recurrent stroke remains an important goal for both quality-of-life and economic reasons. Aggrenox, clopidogrel, and aspirin are all approved for stroke prevention in those who have already had a recent stroke and the PRoFESS trial is designed to directly compare the efficacy and safety of Aggrenox with clopidogrel + aspirin in the reduction of recurrent stroke. The trial will also determine if treatment with the angiotensin receptor blocker Micardis produces an effective reduction in the risk of recurrent stroke compared to treatment with placebo on top of standard treatment.

Eligible Participants are adults at least 55 years old who have had an ischemic stroke within 90 days of entry into the study.

Participation Includes: Study medication, neurological exams, and blood tests
